Tips to Keep Your Job Search Fear Free

By Aafia Jaliawala

As the air fills with the scent of pumpkin spice, it’s that time of year again— Halloween Scaries! It’s the perfect time to reflect on your job search and boost your confidence. This October, face the challenges ahead with courage and creativity. Below, we have six challenges and tips to help you ease the process. Happy Career building! Avoid the witches and goblins this season, by letting ALTA IT help you!

Challenge 1: The Haunted Resume

Tip: Revamp Your Resume

Transform your resume from a ghostly relic to a shining beacon! Don’t be afraid to add volunteer work, internships, clubs/organizations etc. A lot of undergrads think it’s insignificant, but it makes a difference as you earned those hours. Make sure to add detailed experience, like data entry and software like Excel or PowerPoint. Additionally, managers like to see numbers on your resume, so add things like the budget you worked with. Use clear, action-oriented language and ensure it aligns with the roles you’re targeting. Consider getting feedback from a mentor or using a professional service too. A polished resume will make you feel like a confident monster ready to tackle any interview!

Challenge 2: The Creepy Networking

Tip: Connect with Ghoulish Intent

Networking can feel intimidating, like wandering through a haunted house, but it doesn’t have to be. There are many wonderful events to attend that can feel more like social gatherings rather than business ones. Follow different companies, recruiters, event pages on LinkedIn, and other social media outlets to stay up to date with events in your area. If you are still intimidated, start small by attending a virtual networking event. Remember actual conversation will create genuine relationships and leave an impact on hiring managers, recruiters, and industry colleagues. Keep in touch with the people you’ve built genuine relationships with and always dress professional!

Challenge 3: The Spooky Interview Prep

Tip: Conduct a Mock Interview

Interviews can send shivers down anyone’s spine. To combat those nerves, set up a mock interview with a friend or mentor. Common questions tend to throw people off the most, so look up behavioral and situational questions online. Getting an opportunity to interview with a company is both an awesome opportunity and a great way to improve. Ask questions at the end of your interview and, if you’re really interested, ask “What’s stopping you from hiring me today?”  The feedback you receive might be the best constructive criticism you will get or even give you a chance to clarify perceived shortcomings.

Challenge 4: The Cold Email Pitches

Tip: Craft Your Pitch

An elevator pitch can feel like a spell you need to master. Once you identify what type of role you are looking for, challenge yourself to cold email recruiters.  Practice a concise pitch that highlights your skills, experiences, and what makes you unique. The worst response is getting a “no” or no response at all, but don’t let that scare you away. Send out personalized messages, not one standard “form” email by looking at the individual’s profile. You can also send an introductory email, and not get specific about a job or company and introduce yourself to build relationships with recruiters, mentors, and hiring managers etc. Be patient too!

Challenge 5: The Phantom of Self-Doubt

Tip: Build a Confidence Jar

Self-doubt can be a pesky phantom that lingers in the shadows. Combat it by creating a confidence jar! Write down your achievements, positive feedback, and compliments on slips of paper. Whenever you feel unsure, pull one out and remind yourself of your capabilities.

Challenge 6: The Dreaded Job Change

Tip: Explore New Opportunities

Considering a new job can feel as daunting as encountering a ghost in the night. If you’re feeling stuck in your current role, research new roles or industries that excite you. Instead of just quitting your job, start applying, attend career fairs, network, and get in the groove of interviewing. Get advice from people who are in the career field you’re aiming towards. Secure your new job before putting in your two weeks’ notice!

This October, embrace the spooky season as a chance to refresh your approach, connect with others, and ultimately land that dream job. By tackling each one with the tips provided, you’ll build your confidence and prepare yourself for success in your job search. Remember, even the most fearsome monsters had to start somewhere! Bring the best version of yourself before the new year. Happy job hunting (not haunting), and remember ALTA is here to help.
